What is a capon?

The word ‘capon’ in this day and age is used to describe a large chicken that has been raised for a longer period of time.
Traditionally a capon was a castrated male chicken and castration was performed by use of a hormone injection. Today (and since the 1970s) the caponisation of poultry has been banned in the United Kingdom and therefore the word capon is purely used to illustrate the size of the chicken and its exceptional flavour due to its slow growth.
Our capons are reared naturally outdoors on our home grown and milled food, as with all our other birds. They mature slowly therefore offer the perfect size bird with a wonderful taste perfect for Christmas Dinner.

As with all our products please email or telephone an order and we will get back in touch and arrange pick up or delivery. All our cooked goods and our free range chickens are also available to order for Christmas and for orders placed at Penshurst farmers market the pick up date is the 23rd December 3-4pm.
